INFP: How to reconnect and stay grounded

The phrase "out of body experience" is a relatable one to the INFP. In fact, some INFPs feel they spend more of their time watching their life go by from a distance rather than participating in it. A combination of strong Introverted Feeling and low level of Sensing contribute to this feeling of floating above life.

 So what's the solution?

There are many things that can help the INFP feel more grounded in life and more connected to the world and to those around them.

HOW TO RECONNECT AND STAY GROUNDED

1. Spending time exercising your Extroverted Sensing function, the lowest on your list of traits.

Spending time in nature and focusing on what you perceive with your senses can be a wonderful experience for you as an INFP. You have a fabulous ability to appreciate the world and its natural beauty, sounds, and smells. You may feel an overload of sensations when in a big city environment, crowded building, or a rock concert. But out in nature, you can really get in touch with the physical world at your own leisure.

2. Expressing yourself with words.

It's often a difficult task to get an INFP to accurately express their emotions and their complex insights into life. But that's ok. Just talk. Get some words going, even if they aren't the perfect words. Don't get caught up in the fear that you will be misunderstood. Everyone is misunderstood sometimes, it's ok. And everyone is a little weird, so don't be afraid to show people how weird you are. They will like you better for it, or they aren't worth your time.
You will thrive if you surround yourself with people (or just one person or even a blog will do) who will listen to you. You have a deep and complex mind that offers ideas and theories that hold a lot of interest and value to the right people. Writing can also be a way of expressing yourself, but talking to someone can help even more with forming a strong connection with the world around you.

3. Responsibilities: Taking care of others.

INFPs (and most other people) are happier people when they are caring for someone other than themselves. Having someone else depend on you, whether a coworker, student, husband, child, or friend, takes the mind off of self and promotes the feelings of fulfillment and forms strong connections and bonds. There's always someone who needs help. In addition, the INFP will likely enjoy and benefit from keeping a garden or caring for pets. Anything that's living will benefit from the INFP's gentle and loving nature. Similarly, any kind of responsibility such as work, involvement in a cause, or school, helps the INFP feel connected.

 4. Art.
Whether or not the INFP believes they possess artistic talent in some form, they will almost certainly benefit from a hobby involving creativity. INFPs have a knack for creativity and ongoing projects can be extremely helpful in keeping an INFP involved in the moment and looking forward to their day to day life. It can help ease the boredom of routine life which horrifies the INFP.

 5. Breaking Routine

Routine can make an INFP feel so bored with life that they voluntarily attempt to float away and become disinterest in real life and lost in their minds.  Breaking daily routine can be extremely refreshing and help re-ground the INFP in their lives. Breaking routine could be as simple as trying a different grocery store, cooking a new meal, or showering at a different time of day. It could also be something more major such as a trip, a new hobby, or taking a new class. Nothing made me feel more interested in life than falling in love with my husband and starting a family. New experiences help us feel more involved and make life interesting.

So there are a lot of ways an INFP can work on feeling more grounded. Some things may work better for some and not for others. And there are many more ways to feel grounded that are not covered here. I encourage you to try things for yourself and figure out what helps you connect with the world.
